Can Love Really Be Predicted? Scientists Find Mathematical Rules Behind Relationship Breakdowns


Love may feel unpredictable, but researchers studying romantic relationships say some of the forces that make couples grow closer or drift apart can be described using mathematics.

In research discussed by Professor Laurent Pujo-Menjouet of the University of Lyon I, scientists have used dynamical systems models to study how attraction, emotional reactions, conflict, and outside pressures change relationships over time.

The idea is not to create an equation that tells you who you will fall in love with. Instead, these models look for tipping points that could help explain why some relationships recover after difficult periods while others move toward separation. The research could eventually be combined with artificial intelligence to create tools that warn couples when their relationship may be entering an unstable phase.

The math behind a relationship tipping point

One of the most interesting ideas comes from mathematics used to study populations.

Scientists have long used equations to understand how populations grow, decline, and interact. Concepts such as the Allee effect describe a critical point below which a population has a much harder time surviving.

Researchers have applied a similar idea to romantic relationships.

A relationship can be viewed as a changing system rather than something that simply exists or disappears. Its strength can rise after positive interactions and fall when negative experiences continue without recovery.

Pujo-Menjouet explained the goal of this approach:

“We’re not trying to predict who you’ll fall in love with; we’re trying to understand why some couples remain stable despite life’s inevitable shocks while others slowly drift apart.”

In this framework, a relationship can have a critical level of strength. If feelings remain above that level, the relationship may be able to absorb problems and return to a stable state. If they remain below it for long enough, the model predicts that the relationship can move toward separation.

That does not mean an equation determines a couple’s future. It provides a mathematical way to examine how small changes can affect the overall stability of the relationship.

Why arguments may not be the real problem

The models also highlight something that may be more important than avoiding conflict altogether: what happens afterward.

Relationships face disruptions from work, money, illness, children, and other sources of stress. Couples will also disagree.

The mathematical question is whether the relationship can recover after those disruptions.

“The important question isn’t whether couples argue,” Pujo-Menjouet said. “It’s whether they have enough resilience to return to equilibrium afterward.”

This introduces the idea of relationship resilience. A couple that experiences a major disagreement but successfully returns to a stable emotional state may respond very differently from one that remains trapped in negative interactions.

Researchers have also explored delayed reactions in their models. This matters because people do not always respond immediately to something their partner says or does. Taking time to process an emotional reaction could influence how a conflict develops.

Three forces can push love in different directions

The mathematical framework focuses on three broad forces affecting a relationship.

The first is mutual attraction, which can strengthen the bond between partners.

The second is the natural weakening of feelings over time that can occur in relationships.

The third involves emotional responses between partners, meaning how one person’s behavior affects the other’s feelings and reactions.

These forces do not operate independently. Their interaction can determine how stable a relationship becomes when life introduces additional pressure.

Pujo-Menjouet compares this ability to withstand stress with the children’s story The Three Little Pigs. Life will always bring its own “wolves,” including financial problems, illness, work pressures, and family responsibilities. The goal, in his comparison, is to build enough resilience to withstand them.

Could AI warn couples before a relationship breaks down?

The researchers see a possible future application beyond mathematics itself.

Their models could potentially be combined with artificial intelligence to create an early warning system for relationships.

Such a system could analyze changes in relationship patterns and indicate when a couple may be moving toward an unstable state. Instead of telling someone whether to stay or leave, it could potentially highlight a period when intervention may be useful.

Pujo-Menjouet describes the concept as a navigation tool.

“Think of it as a relationship GPS,” he said. “It shows you where you are, where you’re heading, and suggests routes to reach your desired destination.”

The potential value would be in giving couples time to change their behavior before problems become harder to reverse.

Why there is no universal love equation

There is an important limitation to these models: relationships do not work the same way everywhere.

Much of the existing modeling has been based on patterns observed in Western relationships. Culture, religion, economic circumstances, and generational differences can all influence how people form and maintain relationships.

Human beings can also change their behavior in ways that mathematical models cannot fully anticipate. A person may seek therapy, change communication habits, rebuild trust or make a new commitment.

That is why the researchers do not present mathematics as a machine that can predict the fate of every couple.

“Mathematics can illuminate patterns and provide guidance,” Pujo-Menjouet explained, “but ultimately, the success of a relationship depends on two people choosing, every day, to nurture their connection.”

The bigger scientific idea is therefore not that love can be reduced to numbers. It is that some patterns in human relationships may be measurable enough to reveal when a relationship is becoming more resilient or more vulnerable.

And if those mathematical signals can eventually be combined with AI, researchers may one day be able to identify relationship trouble early enough for couples to do something about it.
